Staying in the Love on Vacation

by Diane and Lewis on February 11, 2010

Greetings from Tampa, Florida! We are just finishing a week of vacation during which we escaped the frigid weather back home in Iowa.  It dawned on us that even though we are on vacation together, we don’t feel like we have to do everything together.

Many couples tell us that, ironically, their vacations aren’t completely smooth.  Could it be that there is an unreasonably high expectation that they will do everything together on their vacations? Could it be that there is pressure to fit a year’s worth of relationship quality time with each other into one week?

For example, Diane is an avid walker and loves to walk 2-3 times per day.  While there were days that we took walks together, on several occasions, Lewis chose to sit and relax and Diane chose to go for another walk.

Here is how we stay Madly In Love Forever on vacation: we give each other the space to do what he or she wants. Then neither one of us feels controlled.  This allows us to enjoy the activities we like to do together.

For us, to create love on vacation, we (1) go with no expectations, (2) spend some time doing what we want individually and (3) spend time doing things together.
